Magnesium chloride drawn from the Zechstein seabed, sold as flakes for the bath. One ingredient, no fragrance, no colour. It dissolves faster than Epsom salt and leaves the water feeling slightly soft. We keep the 8 lb bag by the tub and stop counting.

What we cannot claim
The claim that magnesium is absorbed through the skin in useful amounts is not well supported. A 2017 review called the case for transdermal magnesium unproven. Bathing in magnesium-rich salts does have measured effects on the skin barrier itself. So: buy it for the bath and the skin, not for the blood test.

How to use it
The forty-minute bath

Run it hot
Two large handfuls under the running tap. Let them dissolve before you get in.

Leave the phone
In another room. This is most of the active ingredient, and it is free.

Get out warm
Twenty to forty minutes. Rinse if you like, pat dry, and go straight to bed.
